13u Pembroke Lakes Wildcats Are Champions At Cal Ripken Beach Blast

The weeklong tournament began with the skills competitions and homerun derby.  Daniel Rivero was chosen to represent the Wildcats in the homerun derby and he didn't disappoint by hitting 7 homeruns including the orange ball which accounted for 2 points, giving him a total of 8.  The next 13 competitors stepped up to the plate and no one could  come close to Daniel's total (2nd place had 2) as he won the HR King honors.

The Wildcats faced 6 tough teams in the seeding rounds and outscored them 80 to 10 to finish as the number one seed with 6-0 record.  The Wildcats had timely pitching and hitting in the seeding games from Noah Rodriguez, Scotty Gutstein, Jules Burgess, Joey Thompson, and Eric Gonzalez.  They won their semi-finals game and in the finals the Wildcats would face an undefeated team that allowed just 10 runs the entire tournament from Maryland called the Hughesville Orioles.  The Orioles was no easy match for the Wildcats, they had placed 5th out of 103 teams in Cooperstown 2011.

Selecting the starting pitcher for the championship game was a tough choice for Head Coach Manny Gonzalez as he had 4 aces still available to pick from in Nick MacDonald, A.J. Hendricks, Daniel Rivero, and Andrew Rodriguez.  Coach Gonzalez chose fireballer Andrew Rodriguez to start the championship game and he didn't disappoint holding the Orioles to 3 runs as the Wildcats took a 4-3 lead into the 6th inning.  Wildcats relievers couldn't hold the lead and the team started the bottom of the 7th inning down 6-4.  A lead off base hit by A.J. Hendricks was followed by another base hit from Daniel Rivero, moving A.J. to third base.  After one out, Stefan Revelo ripped a line drive for a base hit scoring A.J. and putting runners at first and second.  The Orioles' starting pitcher was finally removed and the reliever faced Nick MacDonald who worked the pitcher into a walk, loading the bases for Marco Gonzalez.  The crowd noise was deafening as Marco fouled off three straight pitches and on the next one, he hit a sharp line drive past the SS scoring the tying and winning runs for a walk-off victory which earned Marco the MVP honors.

The Wildcats move up to the 14u Majors division of the FPBL League in the fall and are looking to add mroe trophies to their mantle.
