TEAM RENTERIA WINS THE CAL RIPKEN-MYRTLE BEACH TOURNAMENT
On 8/6/10 Team Renteria beat the
Academia Snappers from South Florida 11-1 to win the 2010 12U Cal Ripken-Myrtle
Beach, SC ‘Waverider’ Tournament. Team Renteria played 8 games in all and went
8-0 in the 18 team 6 day tournament beating teams from Florida, Pennsylvania,
Michigan, New York, and Virginia. The pitching performances were flawless and
nearly the entire team pitched at one time or another. The average runs scored
against Team Renteria was 2.1 per game and the average runs they scored on their
opponents was 10.8 per game. Six of the eight games were won by 10 run
‘knockout’ rule. Some of the hitting leaders were: Justin ‘JT’ Millares who
carried the team offensively with a .905 batting average (that’s right, no type
o, the kid went 19 for 21 with 8 doubles, 1 triple, 4 home runs w/ a grand slam
in the championship game, & 22 rbi’s), Alex ‘Arod’ Rodriguez .750 (2
doubles, 2 home runs w/ a grand slam in the semi final game, & 7 rbi’s),
Gian-Lucas Borelly .625 (6 doubles, 1 triple, & 10 rbi’s), Tommy Hernandez
.563 (6 doubles, 1 triple, & 5 rbi’s), Eric ‘Erock’ Rivera .556 (2 doubles,
1 triple, 3 home runs w/ 2 in the championship game, & 8 rbi’s), and Richard
Nunez .526 (double, triple, & 10 rbi’s). The tournament began with a home
run derby which was won by our own Chris ‘Flaco’ Clara who hit 7 home runs to
win. Chris also won the Championship Game MVP award for pitching 5 innings (2
strike outs, 1 base on balls, and scattered 5 hits) and only allowing 1 run on a
wild pitch. The Renteria defense was solid turning several double plays and
making big play after big play in crucial situations throughout the tournament.
Hats off to Team Renteria and their incredible performance.
