O's glad to seal deal with Machado.Former FPBL star signs for 5.2 Millions, and Nick Castellanos signs with Tigers for 3.45 Millions

BALTIMORE -- With three minutes to spare -- by scouting director Joe Jordan's estimates -- the Orioles agreed to terms with third overall Manny Machado late Monday night, doling out the second-largest signing bonus in team history.

"[President of baseball operations Andy MacPhail] called that a long time ago," manager Buck Showalter said of the down-to-the-wire deal. "He said that will go down to the last 10 minutes. He said, "I'm not going to blink. But we'll see.'"

Considering one of three stand-alone talents in this year's Draft, Machado -- a high school shortstop from Miami, Fla. -- will automatically become one of the organization's premiere infield prospects.

"It's good," Orioles center fielder Adam Jones said of the addition. "Let's get him started, see how fast they can get here. They say [Machado is] pretty good. He's touted.

"It's a good start to his pro career and I look forward to meeting him next year at Spring Training."

With Machado's signing, the Orioles agreed to terms with 39 of their 49 selections, a hefty haul and the most signings since Jordan became scouting director in 2005.

"It's a very well-rounded Draft," Showalter said. "I know Joe's excited about it. From all facets of amateur players."
