The South Florida SugarCanes emerge victorious in the 2011 Weston NIT Spring
Tune-up. The SugarCanes competing in just their second tournament, faced some of
the best competition that South Florida has to offer. The SugarCanes looked to
improve on their 5th place showing at the New Years Day bash in Tamiami. Taking
on some of the best teams in the state was very difficult with a team so new
said coach Jovon Edwards. We have only been together for 4 weeks, so team
chemistry and unity is generally going to be a struggle. The SFSC displayed
dominant pitching and powerful hitting. SugarCane pitchers Havier Sans, Raymond
Sanchez, Mark Vientos, Kevin Manzanet, and Championship game pitching MVP Jacob
Mercado controlled some of the most potent offenses in 11u Travel Baseball.
SugarCane hitters collected 12 extrabase hits including a huge Solo Homerun by
Raymond Sanchez in the title game against the South Florida Extreme. Tournament
scores the Piranhas defeated the SugarCanes 4-3 in the opening game. Determined
to improve upon their last tournament the SugarCanes put together an impressive
run winning 4 straight ball games. 5-3 over the Pokers, 2-0 over the Piranas,
12-1 over the Pokers and 11-2 over the South Florida Extreme in the finals. The
SugarCanes coaching staff is extremely proud of the boys and their efforts. On
their way to the championship the SugarCanes defeated 2 participants of the
2010 Elite 32 World series.
The SugarCanes hope to represent the Florida Premier Baseball league in the 2011 Elite 32 World series that will be held in
Orlando. Congrats are in order for the team members. Mark Vientos, Nathaniel
