April Fools Tournament 12u Division Champs

The SF Sugar Canes were victorious in the 1st annual April Fool’s Day tournament held in Lantana this past weekend.  The Sugar Canes started the tournament off with a 3-1 victory over the Tommy Hutton Heat on Tuesday night.  The Sugar Canes faced a determined Palm Beach Rebels team that had defeated the Sugar Canes at the Super Nit just a few weeks ago.  The Rebels got out to an early 3-1 lead on a huge homerun by Kristopher Armstrong in the 3rd inning.  The Sugar Canes answered with a 2 run shot of their own by Raymond Sanchez drawing even at the end of the 3rd.  Justin Alintoff a recent addition from the 12u North Palm Beach White Caps pitched 6 great innings and kept the Sugar Cane hitters off balance for most of the game.  Tied at 4 after the 4th inning, the Sugar Cane coaching staff made a costly mistake and elected to pitch to Armstrong with 2 outs and a runner on 1st.  Kristopher deposited a change up over the centerfield fence for his 2nd homerun of the game giving the Rebels a 6-4 lead they would not relinquish.  The first elimination game matched the Rebels and Sugar Canes again.  This time the Sugar Canes would not be denied.  The Sugar Canes scored 3 in the 1st inning on 2 walks and a double by Sanchez.  The Rebels not wanting to let the game get away early countered by bringing in their ace Armstrong.  With a runner on third and 2 outs Xavier Edwards singled to tack on the 4th run for the Sugar Canes.  With Armstrong gaining momentum on the mound and holding the Canes scoreless over the next 4 innings, the Rebels mounted their comeback.  Armstrong delivered a 2 run single to make it 4-3 after an epic 10 pitch at bat with Havier Sans the Canes starter.  The Rebels sent the game to extra innings with a late rally in the 6th inning.  The 7th inning passed with both teams failing to score.  Sanchez and Armstrong were both given intentional passes during extras.  The coaches were determined not to let either of the teams most dangerous hitter defeat them.  Armstrong was lifted for Alintoff to start the 8th inning.  In the 8th the Sugar Canes struck for 2 runs with some timely hitting.  In the bottom of the inning the Sugar Canes closed out the game with a 6-4-3 double play.   The Rebels have really improved according to coach Jovon Edwards.  Anytime you have pitchers who can throw with the type of velocity and mix their pitches well you are going to have trouble scoring runs.  Hats off to the Rebel players, coaches and parents.  In the finals the Sugar Canes faced the Top Ten Baseball Academy.  This game would not have the same dramatics as the previous games.  The Sugar Canes scored 2 in the 1st, 2 in the 2nd and 6 in the 3rd to defeat the Top Ten academy 10-2 in the Championship game.  Sugar Cane pitchers Jacob Mercado, Angel Tiburcio, and Raymond Sanchez held the Top Ten offense to 2 runs.  The Sugar Canes were led on offense by Nathaniel Brodsky, Xavier Edwards, Raymond Sanchez, Jacob Mercado, Shelby Frazier, AJ Evans, Kevin Manzanet, and Havier Sans all collecting hits in the championship game.  Congratulations to the Sugar Canes on winning their first 12u tournament.  AJ Evans, Joseph Corona, Lance Hattan, Alex Nicholaou, Havier Sans, Kevin Manzanet, Raymond Sanchez, Nathaniel Brodsky, Shelby Frazier, Xavier Edwards, Jacob Mercado, and Angel Tiburcio.
