After a long, tough season of Majors Division Tournaments & FPBL competition the Mizuno Edge re-classified with USSSA and won the SF State Championship in their division securing 300 USSSA points and a berth in next month’s World Series.
The EDGE started out slowly, losing both pool play games to the talented Jupiter Hammerheads in a walk-off 5-4 and to the never-give-up or stop-hitting WB Vipers, 14-8. The losses put the EDGE in a position in which they would need to win three in a row on Fathers Day. In the first seeding game, the EDGE threw Alex Creighton who defeated the Naples Hammerheads pitching a complete 6 inning 2 hit 1 walk game to win 3-2. In the second seeding game, Kevin Mendiguren threw 4 1/3 3 hit innings with Anthony Laney closing 1 2/3 no hit innings, with the EDGE defeating Canes Academy by a score of 13-2. The EDGE then headed into the Championship game versus the WB Vipers who earned their way defeating the Jupiter Hammerheads in the other semi-final game. The Championship game was highlighted by a first inning, 3-run inside the park home run by Alex Creighton and a second inning bases clearing triple by Brendan Hughes. Defensively, the EDGE saw Anthony Laney pitch 3 more excellent innings, holding the EDGE’s lead to 7-4 after 3. The Championship Game MVP, Daley Weppner, then pitched the last three innings which saw the WB Vipers true to form style almost pull it off, but a bases loaded catch by CF Kevin Mendiguren and an amazing back handed play at first base by Cade Tierney allowed Daley to strike out the last batter to win 7-6.
Other highlights saw Kevin Mendiguren (7) and Logan Kapreilian (6) lead the team in hits and the Iron Man award for catching went to Roger Edge, who caught all three games (18 innings) Sunday blocking and pick off (6) base runners.
Congratulations to the Mizuno EDGE coaches, players, and especially the parents, that without their support none of this could be possible.
