The Sugar Canes capture their 2nd consecutive Florida State Championship with a combination of pitching, defense and timely offense to defend their state title from a year ago. The Sugar Canes received great pitching from the first game right through the tournament. Raymond Sanchez and Lyon Richardson combined to limit the Florida Pokers offense to 1 run in the first game. Final score Sugar Canes 5-1 over Pokers Baseball. The second game matched the Sugar Canes up against a local private school entry the Wolverines. This game was not closely contested as the Sugar Canes scored 7 in the first inning and never looked back. Sugar Canes pitchers Triston Casas and Jacob Mercado combined to give up 2 hits en route to a 13-0 victory. Elimination started with the Sugar Canes facing the same Wolverines team in the first round. The results would be much of the same. Alex Nicholaou pitched a superb game and limited the Wolverine offense to one run. Each of the Sugar Cane hitters collected a hit in the ball game leading to their 16 runs. The semi final match up between the Miami Sugar Kings and Sugar Canes produced one of the best games of the tournament. This game turned out to be a pitchers duel. The Sugar Canes scored in the first inning and held the lead for 2 innings. Lyon Richardson was in complete control for the first 2 innings of the game. The Sugar Kings rallied with two outs in the 3rd to score their first 2 runs of the game and take the lead. Canes hitters would not be denied as 2 walks and 2 hits later the Sugar Canes had scored 2 runs of their own and chased the Sugar Kings starting pitcher from the game. Over the next 3 innings Raymond Sanchez and the Sugar Canes defense would do the rest. Final score Sugar Canes 3 Miami Sugar Kings 2. The Championship game matched the Canes Academy against the Sugar Canes. Canes academy would score 2 in the first inning off Triston Casas for an early lead. The Sugar Canes answered quickly with 2 runs of their own to tie the game in the bottom of the first. Casas would make his mark striking out 5 of the next 6 batters and bringing a stop to the Canes Academy offense. Sugar Cane hitters began to get their timing off of pitcher Tyler Grant in the next few innings to take control of the game 6-2. Havier Sans pitched the final inning which ended on a double play turned by Xavier Edwards. The Sugar Canes outscored their opponents 43-6 en route to earning the Championship. The Sugar Canes received great catching from Charlie C4 Welch and CJ Calero. The offense was lead by Earl Semper, Xavier Edwards, Triston Casas, Raymond Sanchez, Alex Nicholaou, Lyon Richardson, Charlie Welch, Shelby Frazier, CJ Calero, Jacob Mercado, and Havier Sans. Players Angel Tiburcio and Mark Vientos were unable to attend. Thanks to Tamiami Park and Humberto for running a great event.
