On day one of the USSSA Naples All-Star Invitation, Wellswood All-Stars, Tampa proved to be tough contenders in the 6u & 8u Division. The 6u took care of business in the morning game defeating Cooper City 18-13 while the 8u Wellswood All-Stars beat the PLO Bulldogs 21-3. Pool play continues tomorrow, with Championship Games being played on Sunday.  |

The T-Ball Home Run Derby for the 6 Years Old was a site to see, Tournament Director Gaspar Palmer says. In 10 years of doing these events I had not done a 6u T-Ball Division and boy what a show. Antonio Alvarado from the Wellswood All-Stars banged two home runs to win the contest, along with the Home run Derby we also had the Road Runner Contest and a Hit-the-Target contest for both 6u and 8u Division.

Special Sweet Home Run Derby for Placido Valdes Jr.
|
The event had a special touch with Home Run Derby Champion Placido Valdes and an awesome feeling for Coach/Dad Placido Sr.
Back in January Placido Jr was diagnose with a cancerous tumor near his heart and would learn that he would have to go through chemotherapy to treat his cancer, but that did not stop this brave young man from playing the game he loves. Through chemo and all of what goes through one's mind, specially one of a 12 year, this kid's attitude has not change a bit, he fights through everything he does and last night was a special night for him and the Valdes family, as Placido Jr. blasted three shots over the Home Run fence to defeat his teammate Kevin Vega and win the Home run Derby contest. The joy and thrill on his face along with that of his dad overwhelmed his mother as she broke down in tears of joy. I couldn't help to share this story, with all of you as I, learned of this just this morning. Placido will finish out this tournament and will fly out on Monday to MD Anderson to continue with his chemotherapy. Our prayers are with Placido Jr and his family.
