Palm Beach Nitro takes USSSA Coral Springs Labor Day Bash

Palm Beach Nitro competing in it's first tournament, came out victorious in the USSSA Coral Springs Labor Day tournament.  The Nitro led by coach Miguel Mendez swept through the competition and defeated the Miramar Canes 6-5 in the championship game.

The Palm Beach Nitro would only trail for 1 inning during it's 5 games. The Nitro defeated the defending Florida Premier champs Cooper City Cowboys Friday night 2-1 with great defense and excellent pitching from Morgan Mendez and Javier Carrasquillo.  The Nitro defeated the tough PSN Eagles in the next seeding game by a 7-4 margin.  All of the Nitro players contributed in this victory with great defense from their double play combination of Xavier Edwards and Alexis Vega.

The offense began to flex it's muscles with Javier Carrasquillo hitting a homerun in the 1st inning and Justin Wahid, Nick Shumilla, and Tarik Latchmansingh doing the damage adding extra base hits.  Several Nitro pitchers contributed to the win.  Raymond Sanchez pitch 2 innings giving up 1 run.  The following pitchers contributed 1 inning to preserve the victory. (Joe Kelly, Justin, and Tarik).  In the first elimination game things got started early for the Nitro offense.  Xavier Edwards fresh off his 10u Elite 32 World Series Defensive MVP tripled from the left side of the plate and the offense was clicking on all cylinders. Carrasquillo and Latchmansingh proved to be too much with the bats for the Broward Scorpion coming up with a big homerun and double. The Nitro easily defeated the Scorpions 11-2 with Jacob Mercado pitching 3 solid innings.  Throughout the tournament Javier and Tarik along with Justin Wahid and Nick Shumilla made it difficult for opposing pitchers. On defense the Nitro outfielders Alec Mendez and Justin Wahid threw out runners at first base taking away would be base hits.  In the semifinals the Nitro would face another tough opponent in the Coral Springs Sandlot.  The Nitro jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and received 1 of the best pitching performances from starting pitcher Morgan Mendez.  The Sandlot were able to rally and tie the game up 2-2 in the 4th inning with a rally of their own.  But the Nitro were not to be denied.  2 great plays in center field by Justin Wahid sparked a 4 run rally in the 5th and the Nitro pitcher Raymond Sanchez closed the door by pitching the last inning. The Sandlot received a great pitching performance from Nick Sanders.  Rain would move the championship game from Sunday to Monday.  Holding tru to form the Nitro got out to an early lead against the Miramar Canes. Only to see the Canes battle back and take a 2-1 lead into the 4th inning.  Rain would stop play for 45 minutes with a runner on third base and 1 out for the Nitro.  a base on balls to Edwards, and base hits by Morgan Mendez and Javier  would put the Nitro up 4-2.  the Canes continued to battle and tied the game with a 2 out rally in the bottom of the 5th inning.
The top of the 6th Nick Shumilla led off with a double and would later score for the Nitro to take a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the 6th.  The leadoff hitter for the Canes walked, and it looked as if Miramar had 1 last push in them.
Javier pitching a very effective game induces a ground ball to short. Xavier Edwards and Alexis Vega turned the 6-4-3 double play to kill the Miramar rally.  The last batter went down on strikes and the celebration was on.  Thanks to both team for playing some great baseball throughout the tournament.  Congratulations to the Nitro coaches and parents along with it's players (Morgan Mendez, Alec Mendez, Tarik Latchmansingh, Xavier Edwards, Alexis Vega, Joe Kelly, Nick Shumilla, Justin Wahid, Javier Carrasquillo, Jacob Mercado and Raymond Sanchez.  Go FPBL!!!!!
